Tajik-british relations

Diplomatic relations between Republic Tajikistan and Great Britain are established on January, 15, 1992.

On December 20, 2001 Great Britain opened it's Embassy in Dushanbe.

The Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in the Republic of Tajikistan is Mr. Trevor Moore (21.01.2009)

On February 11, 2008 the Embassy of Tajikistan was opened in London. The Ambassador of Tajikistan to Great Britain is Mr. Erkin Kasymov.

In July, 2002 Under Secretary of Foreign and Commonwealth Office Mr. John Mc. Gregory visited Tajikistan. As a result of his visit representation of Department for international development of Great Britain opened in Tajikistan.

During his visit to Great Britain which has taken place from February 25 - March 1, 2003 Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan T.Nazarov had meetings with representatives of Foreign and Commonwealth Office, members of Parliament and teaching staff of the Cambridge University.

In 2003 the Department for International Development of Great Britain has supported some projects such as rendering of the technical assistance to National social - investment fund of Tajikistan for the sum of 1,5 million sterling pounds, technical assistance to the project of support of small business in Tajikistan for the sum 1,240 million sterling pounds.

On July, 7, 2006 His Highness Duke of York visited Republic of Tajikistan. During his visit Duke of York attended official opening ceremony of new Embassy building of Great Britain and had a meeting with the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, also he visited region of Khatlon, district of Jomi and city of Kurgan-tube.

On October 26-27, 2008 Duke of York visited second time Tajikistan. He was met by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and Minister of Foreign Affairs H.Zarifi, as well as he visited Varzob district and became familiar with the realization of Great Britain projects in Tajikistan.

The legal base of the Tajik-British relations is at a stage of formation.

The Tajik-British cooperation most actively develops in trade and economic sphere. According to the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade the volume of trade between Republic of Tajikistan and Great Britain in 2008 is 11 873,6 thousand dollars, import - 11 486,3; export - 387,3 thousand dollars. For the 5 months 2009 volume of trade of the countries is 1582,7 thousand dollars., import 1502,2; export - 80,5.

Basic clauses of export: cotton production (a fiber, a yarn), ores and concentrates.

Basic clauses of import: mineral oil, the goods of the technological equipment.

Cooperation with the British fund "know-how" on rendering to Republic of Tajikistan on the technical assistance develops also in the field of high technologies.

In territory of Republic Tajikistan five Tajik-British joint ventures are registered:

1. " Khujand- Cotton Ltd. ".

2. "Zaravshan".

3. "Darvoz".

4. " Khujand-Germes-Corporation Ltd. ".

5. " Southern - Tajik Mobile sate ".
