The High-Level side event on the side-lines of the COP26
On November 3, 2021, on the side-lines of the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) in Glasgow, with the initiative and co-chairmanship of the Republic of Tajikistan, the United Nations and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) а High-Level side event entitled “Enhancing Capacity of Landlocked Developing Countries to Address Climate Change, Energy and Water-related Challenges during COVID-19 era: experiences and solutions” took place.
The event was attended by the UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States Mr. Courtenay Rattray, the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Mr. Liu Zhenmin, Zimbabwe's Minister of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Mr. Mangaliso Ndlovu and the Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Mr. Francesco La Camera.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Mr. M. Huseinzoda also attended and made a statement at the event. М. Huseinzoda spoke about the consequences of climate change on the environment, in particular the rapid melting of glaciers, lack of access to clean water and the need for timely action by the world community on climate issues. The deputy minister called on international partners to take concerted action to mitigate the effects of climate change, conduct research and comprehensive assessment of the effects of climate change on countries, and strengthen the capacity of vulnerable institutions.
М. Huseinzoda mentioned the active role of the Republic of Tajikistan in promoting the World Water Agenda and international initiatives of Tajikistan in the field of water and glacier protection, as well as the essence of the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development" for 2018-2028.
Meeting of the Deputy Foreign Minister with the UN Under-Secretary-General
On 3 November 2021, on the side-lines of the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) in Glasgow, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan M. Huseinzoda met with the UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States Mr. Courtenay Rattray.
During the meeting the sides discussed issues related to the development of inclusive cooperation with relevant UN agencies, joint coordinated steps to address the effects of COVID-19 and vaccine shortages, prevention of the consequences of climate change and its negative impact on the environment.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan M. Huseinzoda provided information on Tajikistan's international initiatives in the field of water and glacier protection, in particular the essence of the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development" for 2018-2028.
The sides expressed deep interest in promoting an effective and comprehensive dialogue between the Republic of Tajikistan and the United Nations in areas of mutual interest, in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Vienna Programme of Action for Landlocked Developing Countries.
