Education in the United Kingdom
Education in the UK has developed over centuries and now is subordinated to strict quality standards. The British system of higher education ranks first in the world for its quality and well known as high quality brand. British education focuses heavily on developing writing and analytical skills.
The term "higher education" in the United Kingdom refers to programs whose purpose - the awarding of the degree: Bachelor's degree, MSc (Master Degree) or a doctor (Doctoral or PhD Degree). Higher education can be obtained at universities (degree courses).
UK higher education students are generally aged 18 or over (17 in Scotland), and have usually already achieved further education qualifications, such as A-levels, the International Baccalaureate, Scottish Highers or an equivalent qualification from the UK or another country. Many have completed a foundation or access course too. It usually takes three years for students in the UK to gain their bachelor's degree (four years in Scotland).
UK higher education is split into two levels:
- Undergraduate programmes include bachelors degrees, foundation degrees, higher national diplomas and more
- Postgraduate programmes include masters degrees, MBAs, PhDs, doctorates and more. Usually you need an undergraduate qualification to enter a postgraduate programme.
Most courses are taught in universities, but plenty are taught at colleges, specialist art institutions, business schools and agricultural colleges.
High cost of education in the UK often limits the possibilities of talented pupils and students abroad. There are numerous bursaries/scholarship (awarded to low income applicants) to offset undergraduate fees and, for postgraduates, full scholarships are available for most subjects, and are usually awarded competitively. Documents for the scholarship must be submitted at least a year before the beginning of the course. Some scholarships are paid only on certain programs for a fixed period.
Most scholarships are funded either from private and public funds, or by the universities themselves. UK's largest commercial companies, as well as, for example, public organizations from time to time offer various grants for foreign students.
With outstanding teaching and facilities, UK universities and colleges offer you a world-class higher education and qualifications that are respected by employers and academics worldwide.
If you want to come to the UK as a 'student' it is very likely that you will need to apply for "entry clearance" or a "student visa" before you leave your home country, as the majority of international students need a student visa. Terms and conditions are here: link (or PDF Guidance)
Through studying and working in the UK, you will have the opportunity to develop yourself personally, academically, and professionally. Studying abroad is a great opportunity to develop new skills and experience student life in a new environment, develop your intercultural skills, increase your independence and self-confidence.
Government and the UK Universities provide a large number of scholarships for international students who wants to study in United Kingdom. Do not miss this excellent opportunity!
